Tattoo Questions
-
Start by choosing an artist whose style best fits your vision and submitting a booking request. Not sure which artist is right for you? Our team is happy to help guide you. Every tattoo begins with a complimentary consultation where you’ll discuss your ideas, placement, size, style, timeline and estimated cost. Once you’re ready to move forward, we’ll collect a deposit to reserve your appointment, which is applied toward the final cost of your tattoo.

Every artist at The Crow’s Nest brings their own style, strengths, and creative perspective. Explore each of our artist’s portfolios to find styles that speaks to you. If you’re still unsure, send us your ideas and a few reference images and we’ll help match you with the artist who’s the best fit for your project.
-
Every tattoo is custom, so pricing depends on factors like size, placement, detail, style, and the time required to complete your piece. Simple tattoos can often be quoted quickly from a photo or description, while larger or more detailed projects may require a complimentary consultation. Our studio minimum is $100, which covers most smaller tattoos and up to approximately 40 minutes of tattooing. Larger projects are typically priced by the hour or by the piece, and you’ll always receive an estimate before your appointment is confirmed.
-
Yes. A non-refundable deposit is required to reserve your tattoo appointment and is applied toward the final cost of your tattoo. We allow one complimentary reschedule when requested at least 72 hours before your appointment. Deposits are forfeited for late cancellations, no-call/no-shows, or appointments alterations that don't meet our rescheduling policy.

A little preparation can make a big difference in how comfortable you are during your tattoo. In the few days leading up to your appointment, keep your skin moisturized and drink plenty of water. Get a good night’s sleep, eat a solid meal beforehand, and come in well-rested and feeling your best.
Avoid showing up sick, hungover, or on an empty stomach—you’ll hate life, and your body won’t handle the tattoo nearly as well.
Wear clean, comfortable clothing that gives your artist easy access to the area being tattooed. Keep in mind that tattoo ink stains, so don't wear anything you’d be heartbroken to ruin.
Please arrange childcare before your appointment. Children are not permitted in the studio unless they have an appointment for a piercing.

Yes, tattoos hurt, but probably not as much as you've built it up in your head.
Everyone experiences pain differently, and some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, but people get through their tattoo appointments every single day. You can too. Being nervous is completely normal, especially if this is your first tattoo.
Your artist will be right there with you throughout the process. If you need a moment to breathe, stretch, grab some water, or take a quick break, just let them know. There’s no prize for being tough, and you have absolutely nothing to prove.
Get a good night’s sleep, eat before your appointment, stay hydrated, and come in knowing that you've got this. Take a breath, settle in, and before you know it, you'll be walking out with your new tattoo.

Tattooing involves breaking the skin, which makes proper training, sanitation, and careful technique incredibly important.
Every tattoo is performed using single-use cartridges and supplies, with protective barriers used throughout the station and careful aseptic techniques followed to help reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Upon completion of your tattoo, all used materials are immediately placed in approved containers and later collected by a professional medical waste disposal company.
Every year, our artists maintain their training in bloodborne pathogens, First Aid, and CPR, and our studio undergoes regular inspections by local public health officials. We’re proud of our longstanding record of excellence with the health department and the high standards our team works to maintain every day.
That commitment continues after your appointment. Before you leave, we’ll make sure you understand how to properly care for your tattoo throughout the healing process.
From preparing your station to providing your aftercare, every part of the process is approached with care, attention, and respect for your well-being. It’s not an extra step, it’s simply how professional tattooing should be done.
-
We understand that bringing your child, a friend or family member can feel reassuring, especially for your first tattoo. However, tattoo appointments are designed to be a one-on-one experience between you and your artist.
Keeping the tattoo area limited to scheduled clients gives your artist the space to work comfortably, minimizes distractions, respects the privacy of other clients, and allows their full attention to remain focused on you and your tattoo. Guests are welcome to help you get settled when you arrive, but because our lobby space is limited, they should plan to leave the studio during your appointment and return when you're finished.
If you have children, please arrange childcare before your appointment. Children are not permitted in the studio unless they are here for their own scheduled piercing appointment.
Your appointment is time we've set aside specifically for you. We want you to be able to relax, settle in, and enjoy the experience while your artist focuses on creating the best tattoo possible.

Taking good care of your tattoo while it heals is an important part of getting a great final result. Your artist will go over your aftercare with you before you leave, but here’s what you’ll need to know once you’re home.
About an hour after receiving your tattoo, remove the bandage and wash your hands thoroughly. Gently wash your tattoo with very warm water and the recommended mild antibacterial soap, using your hands and gentle pressure to remove any surface secretions or debris. Rinse thoroughly, then allow your tattoo to air dry or gently pat it dry with a clean towel.
Once dry, apply a thin layer of the recommended fragrance-free, dye-free lotion directly to the tattoo. Continue gently washing, drying, and moisturizing your tattoo two to three times each day until it has healed.
During the healing process, do not pick or scratch your tattoo, and avoid soaking it in water. That means no swimming or hot tubs for three weeks. Keep it out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning for three weeks as well. Showers are perfectly fine—just avoid tight-fitting clothing that may rub or irritate the area.
Some tenderness, peeling, itching, and changes in the tattoo’s appearance can be a normal part of the healing process. Give your skin time to do what it needs to do, follow the instructions your artist provides, and resist the temptation to mess with it.
If you have any questions or concerns while your tattoo is healing, please contact us. We’re always happy to help with questions about your aftercare. If signs or symptoms of infection occur, consult your physician or another qualified healthcare provider.

Numbing products are something that some clients consider using. We understand why they can sound appealing, especially if you're nervous about pain or planning a longer tattoo session.
If you're considering using a numbing product, please talk with your artist before applying anything to your skin. Different products can affect the skin differently, and your artist needs to know ahead of time exactly what you're considering using.
Not every artist is comfortable working with every numbing product. Your artist will need to consider the product, how it may affect your skin during the tattoo, and whether they are comfortable and experienced working with those effects. Applying a numbing product without discussing it beforehand could mean your artist is unable to proceed with your tattoo as planned.
Most importantly, don't feel like you need numbing cream just to get through your appointment. People of every experience level and pain tolerance make it through their tattoos every day. If numbing is something you're interested in, simply have an open conversation with your artist ahead of time so you can make that decision together.

Tipping is never required, but it’s always appreciated. If you love your tattoo and your experience, a tip is a wonderful way to let your artist know, but there is no required amount or percentage, and you should never feel obligated.
There are plenty of other ways to show your appreciation, too. Leaving a review, sharing your experience, tagging your artist when you show off your new tattoo, or simply coming back to see us again all mean a great deal.
At the end of the day, the best compliment you can give an artist is loving the work they created for you.
Piercing Questions
-
We believe a great piercing experience starts with having the time to listen, answer your questions, and give you the individual attention you deserve. Every appointment gives you dedicated time with one of our professional piercers, whose practices follow the high standards established by the Association of Professional Piercers (APP). This allows us to create a personalized experience without rushing you through the process. For that reason, our piercing services are by appointment.
To get started, simply call the studio or message us here through the website. Our team will talk with you about what you’re looking for and make sure we reserve the right type of appointment. Whether you’re planning a new piercing, curating jewelry, shopping for a new piece, downsizing, or simply need some time with one of our piercers, we can help.
A $40 non-refundable deposit is required when booking an actual piercing service and will be applied toward the final cost of your appointment. Smaller services such as jewelry consultations, curations, and downsizing do not require a deposit, but they do still require an appointment so we can make sure a piercer is available to give you the time and attention you need.
Because your appointment time is reserved specifically for you, arriving on time is important. Clients arriving more than 10 minutes late may need to be rescheduled and will forfeit their deposit. This helps us give every client the full amount of time and attention their appointment deserves without impacting the appointments that follow.
Not sure exactly what you need? That’s perfectly fine. Reach out and let our team guide you. That’s part of what we’re here for.

The final cost of your piercing depends largely on the jewelry you choose. Our $40 piercing procedure fee covers the piercing service itself, and the $40 deposit you paid when booking is applied directly toward that fee.
Jewelry and aftercare are additional. Most basic, single-hole piercings start around $90, including the procedure, basic jewelry, and aftercare, and go up from there depending on the piercing and your jewelry selection.
This is where you get to make the experience your own. We offer options for a variety of styles and budgets, from beautiful, simple pieces to fine jewelry featuring precious metals, genuine gemstones, and more elaborate designs. Depending on what you fall in love with, jewelry can range from an accessible everyday piece to designs valued well into the thousands.
There’s never any pressure to spend beyond your comfort level. Your piercer will help you choose jewelry that works for your piercing, your anatomy, your personal style, and your budget so you know exactly what you're getting before we begin.

No. We never use piercing guns.
Piercing guns use force to push relatively blunt jewelry through the tissue. That pressure can create significantly more tissue trauma, swelling, irritation, and potential for complications than a properly performed piercing using a professional piercing needle. Reusable piercing guns also present sanitation concerns because many cannot be fully sterilized between clients.
Instead, we use sterile, single-use professional piercing needles that are opened specifically for your procedure and immediately disposed of afterward in an approved sharps container. We even invest in high-quality, silicone-coated needles designed to reduce friction and resistance as they pass through the tissue. Combined with their extremely sharp, hollow design, this allows our piercers to perform each piercing smoothly and precisely while minimizing unnecessary trauma to the surrounding tissue.
Piercing by hand also gives our piercers greater control over placement, angle, and depth. Your anatomy is evaluated individually, the placement is carefully marked and discussed with you beforehand, and jewelry is appropriately selected and fitted for both your anatomy and the piercing being performed.
These practices align with the standards promoted by the Association of Professional Piercers (APP), which considers piercing guns inappropriate for professional body piercing—even for earlobes.
For us, choosing professional piercing needles over guns isn't about following a trend or doing things the complicated way. It's about precision, sanitation, respect for your anatomy, and giving your piercing the best possible start.

Everyone experiences a piercing a little differently, and some areas of the body are naturally more sensitive than others. But for most piercings, the actual procedure happens very quickly.
We like to describe the sensation as pressure and a pinch. The professional equipment we use, combined with the experience and technique of our piercers, allows the procedure to be performed smoothly, precisely, and with as little unnecessary trauma to the surrounding tissue as possible.
Being a little nervous is completely normal, especially if this is your first piercing. Your piercer will explain what to expect, make sure you're comfortable and ready, and guide you through the entire process. There are no surprises and no need to prove how tough you are.
Take a breath, trust your piercer, and remember—the part you've probably been thinking about the most is usually over before you know it. A little pressure, a quick pinch, and you're on the other side with a brand-new piercing.

Proper training, sanitation, and careful technique are incredibly important when performing any piercing.
Every piercing is performed using sterile, single-use sharps and supplies, with protective barriers used throughout the procedure and careful aseptic techniques followed to help reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Upon completion of your piercing, all used materials are immediately placed in approved containers and later collected by a professional medical waste disposal company.
Our piercers work to the high standards established by the Association of Professional Piercers (APP), including the use of high-quality body jewelry appropriate for initial piercings. Every year, our piercers maintain their training in bloodborne pathogens, First Aid, and CPR, and our studio undergoes regular inspections by local public health officials. We’re proud of our longstanding record of excellence with the health department and the high standards our team works to maintain every day.
That commitment continues after your appointment. Before you leave, we’ll make sure you understand how to properly care for your new piercing throughout the healing process and when you should return for any necessary follow-up or downsizing.
From preparing your piercing room and selecting your jewelry to performing your piercing and providing aftercare, every part of the process is approached with care, attention, and respect for your well-being. It’s not an extra step—it’s simply how professional piercing should be done.

Yes, we pierce minors for certain services, including children’s first ear piercings. When it comes to children, however, our approach begins with two things: consent and confidence.
We don’t pierce babies, and we never want a child to be talked into something they aren’t ready for. We believe children deserve an honest understanding of what they’re about to experience and the opportunity to decide that they’re ready. For many kids, getting their ears pierced may be one of the first times they knowingly face something they’re nervous about, work through that fear, and come out the other side proud of themselves. When approached the right way, it can be an incredible confidence-building experience.
For a child’s first ear piercing, we begin with a required mock piercing appointment. Nothing is pierced that day. Instead, we take them through the experience from beginning to end. They’ll meet their piercer, see the piercing room, learn about the equipment and jewelry, hear what the process will feel like, and have plenty of time to ask questions. Parents and guardians are encouraged to ask questions too.
The mock appointment also gives our piercer an opportunity to determine whether the child is ready. We look for things such as their ability to listen, follow instructions, remain still when needed, communicate with us, and give their own willing consent to the piercing. Our goal isn't simply to complete a piercing—it’s to create an experience the child can walk away from feeling proud of.
If everyone agrees they're ready, we'll schedule their piercing no sooner than 24 hours later. That time between appointments is intentional. It gives the child an opportunity to think about everything they learned and, most importantly, to tell their parent or guardian privately if they've changed their mind or aren't quite ready yet.
If we determine that a child isn't ready, that's okay too. We'll explain our concerns and what they may need a little more time to work on. A “not yet” doesn't mean “never.” Families are welcome to come back when their child has had more time to grow, prepare, and feel confident about trying again.
Our team has more than 15 years of experience working with children through the piercing process, and this approach has grown from that experience. Children's ears are pierced using professional single-use piercing equipment—never piercing guns—and the same careful standards we bring to every piercing performed in our studio.
For other piercings on minors, age and eligibility requirements vary by piercing. Please contact our team and we'll explain what options are available.
A parent or legal guardian must be present for a minor's piercing, and both the minor and the parent or legal guardian must have appropriate state-issued photo identification. Documentation must establish the guardian's legal authority to provide consent. When that relationship isn't established by the identification provided, additional legal documentation may be required. Our team can let you know exactly what you'll need when scheduling your appointment.
Once a child or minor has been approved and an actual piercing appointment is scheduled, our standard $40 non-refundable piercing deposit is required and will be applied toward the final cost of the service.

The jewelry you choose is more than decoration, it becomes part of your piercing and plays an important role in how that piercing heals, feels, and wears over time. That’s why we’re incredibly selective about the jewelry we carry.
Our jewelry follows the high standards established by the Association of Professional Piercers (APP), with carefully selected materials and construction designed specifically for body piercing. We offer high-quality titanium, niobium, and solid 14-karat gold, along with genuine gemstones and premium Swarovski gems. Our collection ranges from beautifully simple everyday pieces to fine jewelry designed to become part of your personal style for years to come.
Quality also goes beyond the material itself. Proper fit, a smooth finish, quality construction, and jewelry designed for the specific piercing all matter. Your piercer will help you choose a piece that works with your anatomy, your piercing, your lifestyle, and, of course, your style.
Not sure where to start? That’s part of the fun. You can book a jewelry consultation simply to explore our collection, see different pieces, and talk through ideas with our team. If you’d like more guidance, book a jewelry curation and let one of our piercers work with your anatomy, existing piercings, personal style, and ideas to help create a look that feels uniquely yours. There’s no pressure to already know exactly what you want, that’s what we’re here to help with.
We also stand behind the quality of the jewelry we sell. Our gem settings and gem clarity carry a lifetime guarantee. If a covered gemstone comes out of its setting, we’ll replace it at no charge. If time and everyday wear cause a gemstone to lose some of its original brilliance, our professional cleaning process can help restore its clarity and shine. The guarantee applies to the craftsmanship and gemstones themselves; it does not cover jewelry that is lost.
We believe the jewelry you wear in your body deserves the same attention to quality as the piercing itself. Beautiful is important. Beautiful, thoughtfully made, and chosen specifically for you is better.

Proper aftercare is an important part of giving your new piercing the best possible start. Before you leave, your piercer will go over your aftercare with you and answer any questions you may have.
Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your piercing. Clean the area twice daily with sterile saline solution, gently removing any buildup around the jewelry as needed. There is no need to twist, turn, or rotate your jewelry while cleaning—in fact, leaving it alone as much as possible is one of the best things you can do while it heals.
During the healing process, avoid unnecessary touching, pressure, friction, and irritation around your piercing. Everyday items such as clothing, bedding, towels, phones, headphones, and glasses can carry bacteria that you don’t want introduced to a healing piercing. Repeated pressure, rubbing, snagging, or movement can also irritate the area, contribute to swelling, and slow the healing process. The cleaner, calmer, and more undisturbed you can keep your piercing, the better opportunity you’re giving your body to heal.
Avoid submerging your new piercing in pools, hot tubs, lakes, or other bodies of water while it is healing.
Leave your original jewelry in place unless your piercer tells you otherwise. Many piercings are initially fitted with jewelry that allows room for normal swelling. As healing progresses, your piercer may recommend returning for a downsize, replacing that initial jewelry with a properly fitted piece. Downsizing at the appropriate time can help reduce unnecessary movement, snagging, and irritation as your piercing continues to heal.
Healing takes time, and every piercing—and every person—is a little different. Some tenderness, swelling, discoloration, crusting, or secretion can occur during the healing process. Even when a piercing looks and feels good on the outside, the tissue inside may still be healing, so continue following your aftercare instructions and resist the temptation to change your jewelry too soon.
If you have questions or something about your piercing doesn't seem right, please contact us before removing the jewelry or trying to solve the problem yourself. We’re always happy to take a look, answer questions, and help guide you through the healing process.
If signs or symptoms of infection occur, consult your physician or another qualified healthcare provider.
